Dear Dr. Norberg:

I have read the transcript of William Aspray's interview
with me. The transcript has very few errors. It seems to me
that they are mostly in connectives and other words that might
have been slurred, but in a few cases they change the meaning.
Besides that, it seems to me that sometimes I was too sketchy
in my replies, and someone might, in some way I can't predict,
misinterpret what I said. Also transitions from topic to topic
are not well marked in my replies, and someone might think
certain matters were connected in my mind, whereas I merely
changed the subject to something that crossed my mind.

I don't think I would often be seriously embarassed if
someone quoted the transcript without further consultation.
However, they might get a more accurate result if they consulted
me first. Therefore, it would be better if you used the
word ``consult'' instead of ``notify''. I do not claim the
right to refuse permission to quote the document as is.

On another matter, I wonder if you know any person
or organization who might help support copying the dump
tapes of the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory
from 7-track to 9-track tapes. The files on these
tapes go back to 1969, and may provide interesting historical
material, since they have many versions of various dissertations,
reports, programs and other documents. Some software still
has to be written to overcome some of the errors from
skewing on the 7-track tapes, and we need to get the
expert to devote full time to the task. The SAIL computer,
which is the only computer at Stanford with a 7-track
tape drive is going to be replaced shortly, so the
matter is of some urgency. The 9 track tapes will be
in use for many years to come.

\closing
Sincerely,
John McCarthy
